£20 - £40
An antique hand coloured original Japanese woodblock print of a hand cart, from The Book of Royal Palanquins Volume Two. Edited by Imaizumi Teisuke and published by Yoshikawa Hanshichi, Tokyo, 1900. Framed & glazed, frame size approx. 40cm x 53cm.
Woodblock printing flowered in the Edo Period and is still considered an art form of great precision and beauty. Following the artist sketch, an image is carved into a block of wood. Black inks form the outline and colour inks are applied to specific areas. The woodblock is then pressed to handmade paper which is then hung to dry. The entire process of composing a single image can take weeks.
